A few months ago my husband and I were in Colombia having the time of our lives. My mom texted that my sister’s family (3 girls ages 6, 4 and 1) were planning a trip to the Great Wolf Lodge in Colorado Springs. We knew we had to plan our travels back to the States soon, so we made sure we were back in time to make a surprise appearance. We were happy we were able to join the crew at the kid’s indoor water park and hotel.
Anticipation was very high, as 4 adults drove 4 hours to surprise 3 little girls. The timing was spot on. We pulled into the huge parking area with tons of open spots just minutes before the family of five arrived. Check-in was a breeze. We walked right up to the front desk and easily got our wrist bands to open our hotel room doors. We had reserved two regular rooms. They were spacious, clean and much like any typical hotel room.
Meanwhile, the two older girls were busy guessing where they were going to spend their Sunday night. They were thinking they were going to a rec center because they saw mom had packed swim suits. They mentioned they knew they were not going camping because ‘Boppee and Betta’ (their names for their grandparents) were going to take them camping this summer. The oldest girl was nearing the end of her kindergarten year and becoming a reader. She saw the hotel and the sign out front that read, “Great Wolf Lodge” and knew instantly they were in for a great night.
As the family opened the doors to the grand lobby, we stood waiting to surprise them. The two older girls were instantly on overload with excitement! Especially when the staff gave them their wolf ears and they got to decorate cookies and drink lemonade.
We all quickly got ready for the indoor water park. Walking the hallway through the hotel to the room of fun we checked out the Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and Dunkin’ Donuts shops for later.
The waterpark was everything we expected. There were a lot of people but we were able to get some chairs. The little one loved the baby area while the other two girls were in awe of the slides and the playground. Since my husband is a kid at heart he immediately hit the slide that drops you straight down through a tube when the floor drops out below you! I never did try that slide but I enjoyed the thrill of the other attractions. Watching the pure excitement on my nieces faces was worth every minute.
Since we only had one night at the lodge (I highly recommend at least two nights!) we only tried the sit down restaurant. We had great service and it was nice to be in a kid friend atmosphere, yet eat really yummy and healthy food.
We stuck around in the lobby just long enough to participate in the dance party, which concluded with bubbles. I’m sure the kids had a lot of fun; I felt like I was at a wedding. Who doesn’t love dancing at a wedding?
Before the kids called it a night, in order start it all over the next morning, we snuck outside for some quiet running. We were the only family enjoying the outdoor area and the beautiful view.
Oh yeah, we also celebrate some extra special birthdays!
